When training your dog there are a few key things you will need to know. Now on a regular basis I would tell you to come on down and let us evaluate your dog. However, not this time. I am going to give you an inside scoop on the do’s and dont’s of training.

1-Always make sure your equipment is in serviceable order and used correctly.

2-Remember, it is good to confine your dog for about one hour prior to his/her training.

3-Keep your dog on a 6-20 foot leash when you are with him to develop an obedient attitude.

4-Treats should be small and semi-soft.

5-Your leashes are used to direct your dog as well as to correct them.

6-All training should be done with a positive attitude.

7-Only use your dogs name to get his/her attention.

8-Sometimes if you touch your dog while giving him a command, it will distract him/her.

9-Do not give your dog a command unless, you are prepared to follow through with making him/her react to the command properly.

10-Make sure you have your dogs attention before giving any command.

These are just half of our helpful hints here at Broadview Kennels, Grooming, and Training. For more information please feel free to give us a call at 303-755-0471!

To be continued…

Some people wonder if changing a dogs food will upset their stomachs. Well I will tell you what happens when you change your pets food. Lets start of with your diet. If you eat nothing but chicken, rice, and grains for three months, then you suddenly start eating steak, vegetables, and potatoes, your stomach is going to flip and turn, while your body tries to figure out how to digest this new substance. In the meantime your going to get an upset stomach and probably some diarrhea, you may even vomit.

Well your dog is the same way. When you buy a dog food, pay close attention to the ingredients. If you start your dog on chicken and rice, your going to want to stick with that food. And there are more than one brand that use the same ingredients, but that doesn’t mean your dog will react the same to that food. If your dog has a problem with a food that you are feeding, don’t just jump into another food. You need to gradually introduce the new food by adding a small amount of the new to the old. Say your dog is eating one cup twice a day, then you will want to give ¾ cup of the old and ¼ cup of the new for the first day. Gradually add the new to the old until the new food Is all that you are feeding. By doing this your dogs body slowly learns to digest the new substance a little bit at a time, which will greatly lessen the chance of diarrhea.

Learn your dog before you board, so you know how sensitive his stomach is to digest a different food. If your dog is very sensitive you may need to send your dogs food to the boarding facility when he/she is gong to be staying. If your dog is “made of steel” then you probably don’t need to worry about what your boarding facility feeds.

Halloween is just around the corner and chocolate is on the rise. Dogs of course when the catch the scent of chocolate they crave it mainly because it makes their mouth water…

Chocolate is a very dangerous substance for a dog or a cat and will affect the differently depending on what kind of chocolate how much the dog was and how much the dog consumes .

Theobromine is the toxic ingredient in all chocolates. What it does once its consumed can be lethal. Theobromine is a stimulant found in the cocoa bean that increases urination and affects the central nervous system and heart muscle. Symptoms from theobromine poisoning are nervousness, trembling, muscle tremors, increased urination, increased thirst, diarrhea, and vomiting. The more chocolate your pet eats, the more severe their symptoms will become, including seizures, coma, and death. These symptoms can happen quickly or show up to twelve hours later.

For instance white chocolate has 20 grams of theobromine. milk chocolate can have 20-40 gams. semi sweet 150-300 grams. bakers chocolate has 300-600 grams.

The best way to keep your pets safe from chocolate I to keep it hidden from your pets. If you feel your dog has consumed to much chocolate. Call th4e vet and they will know how to treat your animal.

And remember to stop by and make your holiday reservations for broadview kennels at least one month in advance to ensure your spot in our aurora kennel!

While some of you may be asking, “What is bordatella?” or “How did my dog get kennel cough?” the answers are here.

Bordatella, also known as kennel cough, is a highly contagious canine illness caused by inflammation of the upper respiratory system. Some common causes are canine distemper, canine adenovirus, canine parafluenza virus, canine respiratory corona virus, or bacterial infections such as, bordatella bronchiseptica.
The virus can spread very quickly from canine to canine, but not to other animals or humans. So you should not be concerned about catching it from your dog.

Kennel cough both viral and bacterial, are spread through air by infected dogs sneezing or coughing. It can also be spread through contact with contaminated surfaces such as, toys leashes, counters, and bones. It can be spread by direct contact with infected dogs. The illness is very contagious for days, sometimes weeks after the symptoms stop.

Symptoms can include but are not limited to harsh dry hacking and coughing, runny nose, sneezing, snorting, and vomiting. Symptoms can seem worse after exercise or getting excited or stressed. Symptoms usually last anywhere from ten to twenty days.

You cannot fully protect your dog from the cough because it can be picked up from nearly everything, from toys to the ground and everything in-between. But if your dog is properly vaccinated it can help with protecting your dog from the virus. Even though the bordatella vaccine does not block all strains of kennel cough 100%, it protects from the most harmful strains.

At our boarding, grooming, and training facility, we require the following vaccines to help protect your pet and the other pets visiting us. Bordatella, due every six months. Da22p (distemper 5in1), due every one to two years depending on the age of the dog. Rabies, due every one to three years depending on the age of the dog.

Places like boarding kennels and grooming kennels are exceptional places for your dog to catch kennel cough. It is highly recommended that wither you get the bordatella injected or intranasal, that its done every six months. Even during the summer months.

If you see any of these symptoms we recommend that your dog sees a vet as this illness can lead to pneumonia. It is very important to make sure that all pets are properly vaccinated to lower the risk of illness and fatality.

At our boarding kennel, grooming shop, and training center, all pets must be properly vaccinated before entering our facility. No pet will be admitted in without written proof of all required vaccines from a licensed veterinarian. Any vaccines that have not been given, can be administered at the time of drop off. However it is always best to administer the vaccines approximately three days prior to visit, to give the vaccine proper time to activate.

Did you know, that while boarding your dog at Broadview Kennels, not only does he get the choice to be indoors or outdoors, but we can also groom and train them? Grooming or training can be very handy, especially if your dog stays for a while it can pick up a kennel odor, and maybe even learn a few good manners.

If you would like your dog groomed at the end of the boarding stay, we can set it up the day of arrival to the kennel. The grooming usually takes place either the day of or the day prior to pick up, and varies in price.

If you would like your dog trained while boarding we will schedule it at the time of arrival to the kennel. The training sessions are ten dollars per session. The sessions usually run anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and include a long walk.

Remember if you want your dog groomed or trained during a boarding stay at Broadview Kennels, make sure to inform the staff member that is checking your dog in that you would like your dog to participate.

Dog boarding fluctuates frequently through out the year. If you are looking to board your dog in the winter months we are pretty much available to take most any breed and size giving the exception of the major holidays. Spring is when boarding picks up a bit with spring break and the brink of summer so reserve a spot for your pet at least a week in advance. Summer boarding is a whole other story, summer is when we are the busiest so make sure you reserve ahead of time (like two weeks) to ensure your pet a spot.

All About Broadview Kennels:

Welcome to Broadview Kennels. We are a kennel conveniently located on the border of Aurora and Denver. We are one of the few remaining boarding facilities in Aurora with indoor/outdoor runs. We can house just over 100 dogs between 1-175 pounds.

When you board your dog at our facility remember, that we let them be dogs. So if they want to bark, they can bark. If they want to run, they can run. If they want to sleep, they can sleep. As long as what they do is safe for them and their neighbors, we allow them to do just about whatever it is that make s them happy.

While boarding your dog can be stressful, it can also be very fun and exciting. Watching the dogs at our kennel is like watching kids play on a playground or at a park. They run back and forth, jump, bark, roll, and some just lay and bask in the sun.

So if you want your dog to get some socialization, boarding experience, quality care, or even just to have a blast while your away, then bring them to Broadview Kennels in Aurora, where a dog can be a dog!
